The Lion’s Trip

As Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, and the Cowardly Lion journeyed on, they came to a great field of poppies. The flowers were so beautiful and so sweet that anyone who breathed in their perfume fell asleep.

Dorothy and Toto soon lay among the poppies, asleep. The Lion tried to carry her away, but he himself felt the drowsiness coming over him. Before long, he stopped, yawned deeply, and lay down among the flowers.

“We must hurry and save them,” cried the Tin Woodman to the Scarecrow. But the Lion was too heavy to move. They could only save Dorothy and Toto, leaving the Lion sleeping in the field of poppies, his great body resting among the brilliant red flowers.
